In this module, students are introduced to nuclear chemistry, photochemistry and their applications. Nuclear chemistry is the study of reactions involving changes in particles in atomic nuclei. It has extensive applications in science and technology, including medicine. Students will learn about the particles in the nuclei and their reactions, as well as the principles of radioactivity. Photochemistry is the study of the interaction of light and chemicals. Besides the principles of photochemistry, the students will be introduced to some typical photochemical reactions and also the basic techniques used in photochemical studies. The other aspect covered in the module is quantum mechanics. The shortcomings of classical mechanics in explaining a number of phenomena in the universe have brought about the development of quantum mechanics that serves as a useful model for dealing with small masses, small moments of inertia and small transfers of energy. Students are introduced to the concepts of quantum mechanics and its applications to atoms and molecules, symmetry and spectroscopies.
