Welcome to the Social Behavioural Science Module. In Semester 2, new topics will be introduced which will be covered in the Social Behavioural Science 2 course (SBS2). These topics will build on the concepts and theories you have learnt in the previous semester
The two courses, SBS1 and SBS2, are aimed to provide students with an understanding of key behavioural science concepts in relation to health and disease behaviours. Social and behavioural science (SBS) applies to a unique range of disciplines -- anthropology, sociology and psychology, to name a few, that involves careful analysis of human behaviour.
Understanding these aspects of human behaviour will enable us to be more effective as clinicians and in delivering comprehensive care to our patients because the practice of dentistry is not only about the teeth or the oral cavity, but also the person as a whole.
SBS 2 covers will address theories and applications in health behaviours & care seeking behaviours followed by concepts in health guidance and managing fear & anxiety in dentistry. These theories and concepts will be discussed in relation to the psychosocial concepts and determinants of health which was discussed in SBS1. Students will be encouraged to explore how these factors could have an impact in the health and wellbeing of an individual as well as the community at large.
Lectures and readings provide students with an overview of theory and implementation.
Group activities provide the opportunity to apply learning to practice simulations, and written paper assignments provide an opportunity to synthesize lectures, readings, and activities into intellectual and creative documents.
